Mobile + Disruptive Technologies = Killer Apps

Last year, organizations across almost every industry became really serious about using mobile technology. The majority of these initiatives involved companies enabling existing applications and business processes with mobile capabilities to extend their usefulness to workers in the field or those on the go, as well as to customers and partners beyond the firewall. This trend will accelerate in 2013, with organizations continuing to deploy mobile apps in the form of management dashboards and tools for supporting the three main domains of CRM (i.e., sales, marketing, and service). That said, however, I believe that in 2013 we are also going to see end-user organizations and vendors develop applications that apply mobile technology in conjunction with …

You are What You Expose

The quips “You are what you eat” and “You are what you read” capture a universal truth: for better or worse your actions define your persona. As of 2013, I believe, “eat” and “read” in these quips will be superseded by “expose.” The APIs you choose to expose will define the kind of services you, your company or your company’s eco-system will be able to offer. It is going to be an “APIs beget services” pattern rather than “Services beget APIs.” If you think I am smoking something strong, take a look at the recent articles Cutter published on the API Economy (click here, here and here). Perhaps the most striking piece in these articles …

A Changing View of Social Media

In the coming year, instead of viewing social media as a marketing tool, similar to ads (even targeted ads), organizations will begin to recognize that the potential for social media lies in the using the tools to build communities around products and services. The resulting communities can be invaluable in providing feedback on design and level of service issues.  Customers and prospective clients can become engaged from early design throughout the life cycle, becoming valued partners with the organization in a mutually beneficial community, focused on improving product and service satisfaction. Social networking, mobility, and analytics are among the key topics for the enterprise today, as companies attempt to leverage social networks for insights, provide on-the-road access to data, and integrate an increasing realm of data into the diversified range of analytics possibilities provided by Big Data. Each of these areas is of growing importance to corporate marketing strategies and internal efficiency. But the confluence of social, mobile, and analytics is creating some important trends in its own right. As we explore in a recent Executive Update (see “SoLoMo Analytics“), many of these revolve around the growing combination of social, local, and mobile — often called “SoLoMo” — that has become a key emerging ecosystem of consumer behavior …

2012 Will Bring an Explosion of Interest in Social Analytics, Social Business Intelligence

I predict that 2012 will bring in an explosion of interest in Social Analytics, Social Business Intelligence, and the use of post-relational database technologies like Hadoop/HBase. In 2011 the world observed the power of social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and others on Middle Eastern human rights movements; corporate greed and customer service snafus; and the most recent Occupy Wall Street movement. In 2012 organizations will be exploring how they can glean valuable and actionable information from all of this unstructured, publicly available, and passionate information. Cloud-Based Collaboration Suites Take Off

Prediction: The ABS Movement Gathers Steam ABS stands for “anything but Sharepoint.” While Sharepoint 2010 added capabilities and fixed others since the 2007 version, it is still a complex, unwieldy, and costly product that often requires add-on software to be really useful. The wiki feature is still deficient, and the term store has too many holes to make it a real enterprise-wide taxonomy tool. In the meantime, a number of cloud-based, highly collaborative, easy-to-use products have emerged that can meet 80% of some users’ needs at 20% of the cost. I’m talking about products like Jive (which hopefully SAP won’t love to death if the rumors of an acquisition are true), Yammer, and IGLOO. IGLOO …

Coming Soon to an Enterprise Near You: Crowd-Based Business

If 2011 was the year of the “Social Enterprise”, then 2012 -2015 will be the years recognized for Crowd-Based Business (CBB). The “Social Enterprise” is being touted as the next big thing… the new way to do business, a social way to do business. But the next “big thing” in collaboration is crowds, not social. Social is only a new method of connecting and discovering information, social does not enable and guide action. Business is about delivering results, and for that you need a crowd! A crowd as “a network that drives an outcome, task or goal” has business value. Understanding how crowds can add value to your business and also ensuring your business does not …

This month, Cutter unveiled its redefined BI practice, Data Integration, BI & Collaboration. I know it’s a mouthful, so let’s just call it “DBC” for short. As the new Practice Director, my aim is to shape this practice to best address your needs, but more importantly to continuously adapt as your needs change. I also suspect you are looking for Cutter to assist you in staying aware of emerging ideas and trends that might benefit your organization. Please consider this post an open invitation to join an ongoing dialogue that will help me shape this practice appropriately. I hope you’ll share your questions, ideas, and feedback to make this venture a success. The practice name …

Defining Social Media

“Social media” is one of these phrases that has emerged in recent years for which there is still not a single, broadly accepted definition. Thus, every author tends to propose his or her own. This is not just vanity; it is also the sign of an immature and rapidly evolving field. In a recent Executive Update, Cutter Fellow Steve Andriole and Cutter Senior Consultant Vince Schiavone define social media by extension, listing the following components (with my examples added in parentheses):[1] Social networks (LinkedIn) Blogs and microblogs (WordPress and Twitter) Forums and message boards (Yammer and Google Groups) Multimedia sites (YouTube and Flickr) A definition made up of a list has some drawbacks: it does not …

The fast rise of software talent marketplaces like oDesk and uTest represents a profound transformation. Software is no more a world of places – Silicon Valley, Seattle, Bangalore, Krakow or Tel Aviv. Rather, software is fast becoming a world of work streams. These streams are tied together through social networking and collaborative techniques in which virtual team spaces replace the site, the conference room, the metaphorical shelf on which the software artifacts are stored… and the water cooler. Three trends drive this transformation in software from a world of places to a world of streams: Shortage of talent. Have you recently tried to hire highly skilled programmers in areas such as mobile applications or cloud …
